What Choices Do You Have When It Comes To The Types Of Roofing Materials?
With all the different types of roofing materials, you have quite a decision to make. You might have thought you would just go with asphalt shingles, and that’s fine. Yet you need to know about the different types of asphalt shingles, too. By the time you look at the different types of materials used for roofing, you might even make a different decision.
Roofing Materials
-
Solar Tiles
You’ve heard of solar panels, but have you heard the term solar tiles? These types of tiles aren’t going to cover an entire roof. However, what it’s about is the solar tiles being integrated into your existing roof. They would replace actual tiles, but they would not be your roof in totality. If you have been wanting to offset energy costs, and you are looking at getting a new roof at the same time, you might think about a combination of solar tiles and another roofing material.
-
Asphalt Shingles
We still have to talk asphalt shingles for a moment. They are the most popular roofing material after all. When you are looking at the various types of asphalt shingles, consider the fact that there are impact resistant materials. If you were to get these shingles, you might be able to pay less for homeowner’s insurance. That would be a nice discount to get, wouldn’t it?
Warranty Of Asphalt Shingles
All the way around, you want to think about quality roofing materials at an affordable price. As you look at the different types of materials available, even the differences in asphalt shingles, one thing you want to pay attention to is the warranty. How long are the roofing materials supposed to last?
In general, what you might want to know about the warranties in relation to roofing materials is what you can expect from asphalt shingles, the most popular choice. You can use that warranty as your base as you compare different materials in order to make a decision. That being said, the basic warranty for asphalt shingles is typically going to be about 20 years, and that’s about how long you can expect them to last.
Yet there are certain types of asphalt shingles that can last longer. Other types of roofing materials can last longer, too, but they are of course more expensive. As you compare the different types of materials, what you might also want to do is look at how much they cost on average.
-
Metal
Now let’s look at another type of material, metal roofing. Some sources point to the fact that a metal roof can last up to 60 years. Some say 50 years, but you get the point. And what’s great about metal roofs is they don’t require as much maintenance. They are durable and weather resistant, and there are different types to consider. Corrugated roofing materials are the cheapest, and you can work your way up from there.
One of the questions you ask a contractor deals with the plan for taking the old roof off of your home if that needs to happen. In the case of a metal roof, you don’t have to worry about that. Sources point to the fact that a metal roof can be installed over the top of your existing roof.
-
Clay Tile
Clay tiles are, in my opinion, the best type of roofing material, but they aren’t for every situation. First of all, they can be quite costly. I have never had a clay tile roof. I just like them, and all things considered, it would be the type of roof that I recommend. Metal roofing is my 2nd favorite, then slate tile and then asphalt shingles. Yet I like all four of the options.
-
Stone-Coated Steel
Have you heard of stone-coated steel roofing? This type of steel roofing is made up of interlocking panels. That actually sounds like a very convenient option, doesn’t it? Not only that, but these types of panels are versatile because they can look like other types of roofing materials. These interlocking panels are also considered to be very economical.
-
Rubber Slate
Have you also heard about rubber slate? A roof made of this type of material can actually last up to 100 years. When you get to looking at certain types of roofing though, you have to realize that some of the roofing companies out there might not be used to working with those materials. Keep that in mind if you want to go with a material choice like rubber slate.
-
Others
Just like there are clay tiles, there are also concrete tiles, too. And when you are looking at a material like clay or concrete tiles, you also might want to know what locations and climates are good for those roofing solutions. Have you also heard of green roofs? Those are another type of roofing material, but a lot of extras are required to put them in place.
